It works as intended for me, which is to get a solid light seal against the eyepiece for work in bright and/or glary environments. It takes only a small amount of getting used to - you have to be a bit more meticulous about how you put it to your eye, in order to get it positioned correctly.

It's also occasionally convenient that, on the D500 at least, you can push it back against the camera, inverting the cone and giving you an unobstructed view of the eyepiece. Convenient when cleaning the eyepiece, when temporarily using it with glasses, and for compactness in storage. The only caveat is I'm not sure it's strictly intended to do that - I do wonder if repeated folding of it back and forth will wear out the rubber.
